Chris, If you aren't using the otomax yet, go ahead and start - the ear flushing will not heal the infection. Also, I would give him 1T of yogurt per day, any flavor. Yogurt has been used with great success to prevent ear infections - the other thing to try is 1T of apple cider vinegar in the food each night. Good luck with your guy... Our first shar-pei, "Murray" had ear problems. We did not show him so perhaps we had more flexibility to deal with the problem. Our vet pierced a hole beneath each ear so the canals could clear normally and get some air. It also was very helpful when we flushed his ears.

Hi there, My shar pei is named Bella. I got her for pet quality and have come to love and appreciate her flaws. She too has recently had ear infections and her ears remain her itchiest part. My vet has diagnosed her with stenosis of the ear canal, meaning that they are very small which causes the air flow to be limited and the infections to be frequent. I was told the only correction of this is costly surgery. I am not sure what to do since the cost of surgery is what I paid for her and that is only for one ear, and also depends on how far they have to go to correct the problem. I too am looking for alternatives and suggestions. I have stopped trying to flush out her ears because I seem to think it makes her ears worse by keeping water in her small ear canals. I keep reading about the yogurt so I really think that I am going to try that, as soon as she is off her special diet for allergies. Let me know what you think.

We have the same problem as alot of others. We take Torre to the vet monthly for her ears. There seems to be fluids sitting in her ears. He suggested surgury, first I'll try the yogurt solution, if someone knows how and why that works please responde. Thanks

You refer to trying yogurt for ear infections. Where did you learn about that? What are the specifics (e.g., type, quantity, etc.)? Maybe if you can give me the source of the information, I can go there and figure out the other information. Thanks. Brenda

If it is not your intention to show your dog and all other efforts fail, you very well may wish to consider surgery. Our first Shar-Pei, Murray, had this problem. The operation essentially created 1 tiny hole beneath each ear. This seemed to prevent any type accumulation in the ear as is cleared down and out through these small orifices. Murray had this procedure when he was 2 years old. He never had an ear problem after that and lived to be 13.

hi there - my mr. magoo has had ear problems also & my vet said it might be a food allergy to wheat. which of course is in everything but i will try the yogurt idea and also for treats i have been giving him cereal ( rice chex, corn chex, honeycomb... just be sure to check ingre. he loves them.) his dog biscuits contain wheat as do all of them.

It's really important to define "what" type of infection your pei has. Is it bacterial? Is it candidae? The treatment for both is not the same.
If it's bacterial , then Otomax and other antibiotics will help, but all the yogurt in the world won't IF it's candidae or allergies, then antibiotics will only serve to help complicate the matter in the long run. You have to take a good look at the food you are feeding your pei. Any type of wheat or grain must be removed from the diet entirely and the ears can very successfully be treated with colloidial silver or gentian violet.
Cheers MM

Hello, I have a sharpei also and I cleaned his ears everyweek or sooner and he has not had any problems at all. You just have to make sure his ears are clearned a couple times of week.

Albert, Thank you so much for this post. We have a brand new Pei rescued from California Sharpei Resuce in Redding, Ca. We took our Chloe today to get her eye stitches and her spay stitches out. When the Vet checked her ears, she said that Chloes ears were infected and although she didn't see any yeast in the slide, she suspected it was deeper in her ear canal which she could get to. Her ear canal was extremely narrow. The vet did mention a surgery but she said it would impair her hearing. Chloe is only 8 months old. We love her so much already. I will keep watching this thread. Also of interest was the post about the colloidial silver or gentian violet.
Re: The yougurt. We are feeding her Eagle Pack Blue which already contains yougurt cultures.
