I had to have this surgery done for huey(1 yr old sharpei). At first I thought one of his eyes was still problematic as weeks after surgery, he started closing it but lately it looks better. The dr told me that 98% of the time, the dog doesnt need a second surgery. Anyone else ever had this done?

Yes, Entropian is an all-too-common problem in the shar-pei. It is important to know what to look for when purchasing a puppy, and often if the sire or dam has had the problem, it is passed on to the offspring. My first shar-pei had entropian and had the surgery done, and then had to have it done again because it didn't fix the problem completely - my vet did the surgery again at no charge. If a puppy has to be "tacked" as puppy, which is also not uncommon, you really have to watch the eyes to make sure they don't develop entropian, and if they do, it's important to keep them tacked until they are about a year old, and then they can have the surgery done. I recently bought two pups from a so called legitimate breeder. When we picked up the pups one had its eyes tacked closed. The sutures were large [my vet says like he would expect to see on a horse] and my vet promptly removed them. After a few weeks we took the pup back and he examined the eyes and saw that the sutures had rubed ulsers where they had put pressure on the eye ball. We are not exactly sure what the final out come is going to be. We took him to a doggie Optholomogist and he tacked the eye lids out. He looks much better and his vesion is good enough that he can see a fly buzzing around his head. The other pup has beautiful eyes, his only problem is that he had a very severe bout of FSF. Iwould be interested in hearing about others experiences with eye tacs. I have another story to tell about this breeder who needs to get out of the business. P.S. this breeder gave these pups at 6 weeks Which we didn't know until we got copies of the papers.

So sorry to hear of your problem(s) Hopefully your pups eyes will be fine now. As far as FSF, just give an aspirin to help with the pain and bring down the fever. Of course if temp gets too high you must go to the vet. Pups should never leave home before 8 weeks. Please get back if you have any further questions. Sue

Hello Mallisa This is only advice and I recommed you consult a veterinarian but try Malaseb Shampoo and bath him according to the instructions on the bottle. He may be going through a bad puppy molt. If he does not seem to get better he may need therapy and a change of diet. revivalanimal.com/search.asp?t=ss&ss=Malaseb
