I am a relatively new shar pei owner having found my girl in the pound. She is now 2yrs old and has been with me and my kids for just over a year. We all love her to bits but she has a really bad odour even though I bathe her regularly. Fleas are a real problem at the moment and her fur is getting very thin in places from her scratching. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to help her out as I unfortunately can't afford a trip to the vet at the moment.

You have to get rid of the fleas - there is an over the counter flea drop that I have used with great success - it is called "Bio Spot." Forget about the stuff at Wal-Mart, it doesn't work. Give your friend a flea dip first, then apply the Bio Spot. In the meantime, you can give them one or two Benadryl per day until the itching gets under control. If this doesn't stop the itching, you will need to see your vet, and maybe even a "doggy dermatologist." They can test for bacterial and/or yeast infections on the skin's surface, allergies, etc., and provide the proper medications. Most family vets can only test for mange, and if that is negative, they will refer you to the dermatologist. The most important thing is to get rid of the fleas, not only on the dogs, but in your home - you can buy flea bombs at Wal-Mart, and they work well. Many dogs are allergic to the flea bites, which makes them all the worse. Good luck! Mindy Carter Soshi's Shar-Pei www.fidnet.com/~mindy

Here in Finland most of us wash our dogs with pine soap. It treats the skin and almost every kind of skin problems evanish. Try it, when i wash my collies with it, their fur get excellent.
